FAQ on Elective Classes for DBCS Parents

1.        What time is the elective class?
11:30-12:30pm

2.        Do I have to take elective class?
No, elective classes are optional.

3.        Do I need to pay for the elective class?
No, we raise funds from charitable events or donors to help fund the elective classes. However, some elective classes do require students to pay for materials or tools needed for the class. For example, you need to have your own tennis racket for the tennis class. Please check our website for required materials or tools for each elective class.

4.        Can I choose more than one elective class?
NO, you cannot. They are all offered at the same time. You can choose different elective classes in different years.

5.        Can I change elective classes during the academic year?
Yes, theoretically, but we strongly discourage that because 1. Elective classes have size issues, they can neither exceed the cap nor fail to meet the minimum requirement; 2. Many classes teach in a step by step way, hard for students and teachers if students opt in mid-way during the academic year. Students need permission from the office to switch elective classes.

6.        Will DBCS offer different elective classes during the academic year?
Yes, it is possible we offer new elective classes during the academic year. We are open to suggestions. Once a new class is proposed, we will open the class for sign up. Students can choose to switch into the new class. If the sign up reach the required number of students, we will have that new class.

7.        Will an elective class be cancelled during the academic year?
Yes, unfortunately, that might happen. If a class’s enrollment can not reach the minimum requirement, we may cancel that class.

8.        My kid has already taken an elective class and can he/she take the same class again?
Sure. Some classes are designed in a way students can take it for more than a year, such as drawing and advanced drawing, dance, arts and crafts, computer, etc. However, some classes are designed as an intro class for beginners, taking more than a year may not help students learn new skills or skills at higher level, such as robotics. Ask the teacher, if you want to take the same class again.

9.        When and where should I pick up my kids after the elective classes?
Most elective classes are offered in the 300 building. Please make sure adults who come to pick up and the students who take the elective class KNOW which class the student is in. Students are prohibited to switch elective classes on their own. Two classes, Dance class (Aerobic Room, 851, on the 2nd floor of the Gym), and tennis class (Tennis courts of DBHS) are on the other side of the campus. We will have teaching assistants bring students to the location. Parents need to pick up at those places. Please pick up the students in dance and tennis class first before picking up siblings in the 300 building.

10.        Dance class sometimes change locations, how should I know where to pick up?
Unfortunately, DBHS needs the Aerobic room from time to time. Usually, we can only know the availability of the Aerobic Room in the morning. In most cases, if the Aerobic room is not available to us, we will use the Dance Room at 903. We will establish a Wechat group for dance class parents and notify in the group if there is a change of location.
