Memo on Student Safety Improvement at DBCS

On 01/27/2018, DBCS had 3 meetings on the student safety improvement, particularly safety during recess.
At the teachers’ meeting, after discussion, DBCS adopts the following measures to improve the safety:
1. Enhance safety education, mandatory safety rules reviews, regular safety rules reminders by teachers to the class so that students know and get remaindered about rules that they should follow during recess.
2. Ask students to review “student handbooks”, require student and parent signature after review all existing rules in the handbook at the start of the school year or at the time when new students enroll. Handbook will be available online for regular reference and review.
3. 3 teachers will be assigned for recess supervision duty every school day. Together with at least 3 adult volunteers and 4-5 TAs, there will be a group about 8-10 people supervising during recess.
4. K level class will have recess at different times from the regular recess. Each class will use a separate designated activity area for the recess to avoid crowding. Teachers of K classes and their TAs will accompany the whole class as a group throughout the recess.
5. Purchase of signs that signal boundaries of student activities during recess.
6. The first aid kit will be available in office and DBCS will have an Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED staff on site.
At the parents’ meeting, after discussion, DBCS will re-implement the parent volunteer program to help with recess supervision. Call for volunteer will be sent to all parents. Every week, 3 parent volunteers will help with recess supervision. Parent volunteers will have a visible safety jacket on.
At the TA meeting, we decided that TA recess supervisors will no longer assigned to every TA in turns. Instead, TAs will form a small group that can get trained in supervising recess and also will come to DBCS on Sat regularly. Among the small group of TAs, 3-4 TAs will be assigned to help with recess each Sat.
